Rama Rao returned to India after spending 2 years as a post-doctoral associate in Prof. E J Corey’s group. At that time, an unusual problem faced by the government of Maharashtra drew him to what was regarded as an insurmountable difficult project. India was the largest exporter of dried leaves of VincaRosea to the USA. Eli Lily had a virtual monopoly then, in insolating Vinblastine and Vincristine, the two dimeric alkaloids used widely as anti-tumor agents. In fact, even today, Vincristine is the only drug for pediatric leukemia. Owing to bad quality of supply from India, Eli Lily initiated their own plantation in Houston and encouraged cultivation in parts of Africa. As stocks piled up, the Maharashtra government was critically interested in the isolation and export of Vinblastine and Vincristine. With financial aid from the government, Rama Rao began this industrial oriented work. It was generally thought that alternatives to the process of Eli Lily, which depended on tedious chromatography, were not possible without immense investments and large teams.

Roles and Responsibilities

Role: Basic idea about Process R and D and scale-up setting, ensuring delivery in accordance with project timescales and deadlines.

Maintain up to date documentation and records of the experimental work.

Chemist Candidates for Chemical & Refractory Company Role:

Should have experience in QC tests for end products and support application development team for testing.

To Assist Head – R and D in carrying out various experiments.

Handle laboratory equipment and supplies safely and effectively.

Handling equipment’s like Reactors (SS, MS, GLR), Pumps( Centrifugal, AOD, Gear Pumps, Dryers (FBD, Tray Dryers) etc.
